Two paddleboarders in difficulty were spotted by two highly trained volunteer watchkeepers from NCI Porthcawl, one the National Coastwatch Insitution's 61 coastal stations.
It was a Sunday evening and the watchkeepers were completing a routine scan of the bay using the state-of-the-art technology provided by Sirius Insight.
In the distance, the watchkeepers saw the two people on a paddleboard waving for help about half at kilometre out to sea at Ogmore by Sea. They had been caught by the strong offshore winds – winds that blow from the coast out to sea.
The watchkeepers immediately contacted HM Coastguard who sent the Llantwit Major Coastguard Rescue Team and the Porthcawl RNLI lifeboat who brought them safely back to shore.
This is another example of how important state-of-the-art technology, combined with the selfless dedication of NCI’s volunteers, continues to help save lives at sea.
