Maritime security in national waters

Sirius Insight has supported the Joint Maritime Security Centre (JMSC), the UK Government’s centre of excellence for maritime security whose mission is to monitor and understand maritime security threats and risks and to then lead cross-government, multi-agency coordination and response. Sirius Insight delivers cutting edge technology to provide a 24/7/365 service, supplying maritime data from sensors deployed around the UK.

“Sirius Insight has a record of consistently high service, providing data for use by key maritime stakeholders. JMSC value their wealth of expertise in maritime security and technology, and the way in which they engage proactively to support operations.”

Support to Small Island Developing States (SIDS)

The UK Government requires maritime domain awareness support to SIDS to mitigate the risk posed by increased maritime threats to security, law and order. Sirius Insight are tasked to provide maritime domain awareness and understanding, including very remote locations without power, to enhance the existing surveillance arrangements.

Having established the coastal coverage using PULSAR, the service has been expanded to include over the horizon surveillance with QUASAR.

“Sirius Insight demonstrated remarkable agility and speed of response. Working together with JMSC to understand the operational requirements, they started to install sensors in less than a month to reinforce the maritime border. They also delivered enhanced technology in the Maritime Operations Centre and continued the development of local watchkeepers in support of this. As well as the immediate tactical advantages, this contributed to regional information sharing and helped to strengthen relationships with partners.”

Rapid Deployment Vehicle (RDV)

Supporting Very High Readiness law enforcement and security forces.

For urgent or very short notice deployments, our RDV is deployed. On arrival at the required location, it is set-up, operational and providing a full PULSAR service within one hour.

Self-sufficient, with its own communications and initial power supply, the RDV can be used as a tactical operations cell and transmit data into Maritime Operations Centres.

G7 Summit

The 47th G7 Summit was held in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, in June 2021. We provided a maritime surveillance solution that extended along the coastline between St Ives and Carbis Bay, reporting contacts of interest 24/7 to the Marine Police and Royal Navy guardship HMS TYNE.

Our ability to establish data-driven patterns-of-life meant the local activities continued with less impact whilst ensuring the safety of the Summit attended by eleven Heads of State and Government.

COP26

This was the world’s most significant summit on climate change held in Glasgow in the UK in November 2021. Sirius Insight made a vital contribution to the security of around 120 Heads of State and Government as well as 20,000 delegates in the event venue.

We provided the outer layer of maritime security on the approaches to the River Clyde, tracking all marine activities and reporting contacts of interest to Police Scotland.

Sirius Insight provided Maritime Surveillance on the River Clyde, tracking activity which was alerted to operator and email distribution groups.

Safety of coastal waters and saving lives at sea

The National Coastwatch Institution operates 60 stations around the coasts of England and Wales. They keep a lookout around the coast, reporting safety-related incidents to HM Coastguard for coordination by Coastguard Rescue Teams, Search and Rescue helicopters, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), as well as the other emergency services.

Sirius Insight supports the National Coastwatch Institution through a long term partnership that delivers and integrates maritime surveillance technology. These upgrades to their facilities enhance the effectiveness of the watchkeepers, playing an important role in helping to save lives at sea.

"We are delighted with our strategic partnership with Sirius Insight. It’s a natural partnership for us, bringing class-leading technologies to our stations helping us to expand and improve our network and continue to help save lives around the coast."

Surveillance of a Marine Protected Area to protect a UNESCO biosphere

Sirius Insight selected and tested equipment suitable for this unique and sensitive environment before being shipped and installed on a remote sandy island, without power. The sensors were calibrated and training provided to the marine rangers.

The system is now helping to monitor and manage fishing activity to ensure ongoing protection for the lagoons and sandbanks with their high biodiversity and precious populations of corals, marine life and sea birds.

Sirius Insight was contracted by the Marine Management Organisation to provide maritime surveillance to protect a UNESCO biosphere in the Indian Ocean.
